Neuropsychology

What is Neuropsychology?

Neuropsychology integrates neurology and psychology into one field.  A neuropsychologist is specially trained to evaluate brain-behavior relationships. Neuropsychological evaluations objectively and scientifically determine an individual's cognitive strengths and weaknesses resulting in the diagnosis of psychological, educational or neurobehavioral patterns. Such information allows a neuropsychologist to make recommendations as to the appropriate action to be taken by a parent, health or legal professional, educational specialist or school district.

It is important to seek out a board-certified neuropsychologist - a neuropsychologist who has completed a Ph.D., a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in a medical setting, two or more years of experience in the field and has passed the rigorous board certification procedure, including preparation and submission of cases and an oral examination. Individuals who do not meet such criteria do not meet the definition of a clinical neuropsychologist. They are considered clinical psychologists who administer psychological tests. Psychologists who claim to provide neuropsychological evaluations but have not met the required credentials often cannot provide appropriate testing, recommendations and accurate diagnoses.

To ensure the neuropsychologist you have chosen has the appropriate level of expertise and meets the highest standards of the profession look for the letters "ABPP" or "ABPP-CN" after a neuropsychologist's name. This indicates the individual is board certified with the most rigorous designation in the field by The American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) and/or The American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology (ABCN).

Early Childhood Evaluations

Dr. Hahn has expertise in evaluating preschool age children. She is an advocate for understanding a child's developing brain as early as possible to ensure the child receives appropriate services. Research has shown implementing interventions early in development produces the most positive outcomes versus the “wait and see” approach.

Autism Evaluations

Assessing for Autism requires specialized training given the nuances of signs and symptoms. Dr. Hahn believes strongly in not only relying on subjective measures such as questionnaires but also integrating objective tools to asses an individual’s cognitive, emotional, and social skills.

Independent Neuropsychological Evaluations (INE)

At times, school districts and parents may agree an INE is an appropriate next step to gathering information regarding a student’s cognitive, social and emotional strengths and areas of targeted growth. Dr. Hahn is known for providing an unbiased assessment of New Jersey school district students to assist with educational planning and academic placements.
