Concussion/Traumatic Brain Injury

A neuropsychological assessment of concussions plays a crucial role in evaluating the impact of the injury on cognitive functioning and guiding appropriate management and rehabilitation strategies to facilitate recovery. The assessment begins with a comprehensive clinical interview with parents and the child/adolescent to gather information regarding the individual’s medical history, mechanism of injury, symptoms experienced since the injury and any previous concussions or head injuries. Information about the nature of the injury, loss of consciousness, post-traumatic amnesia, and other relevant details is essential.

Neuropsychological tests are used to evaluate various cognitive domains that may be affected by a concussion. Symptom inventory questionnaires are usually completed as well. The results of the assessment are integrated to develop a comprehensive understanding of the individual’s cognitive, physical, and emotional functioning following the concussion. This information guides treatment planning, including recommendations for return to activity/play, rehabilitation interventions and academic/work place accommodations. Repeat assessments may be conducted over time to monitor symptom resolution and cognitive recovery. This allows for tracking of progress and adjustment of treatment plans as needed.
